Historic, Grade II Apartment With Direct Literary Links To William Wordsworth

Located in the very heart of popular Ambleside, Wordsworth’s Stamp House proudly displays an English Heritage plaque denoting the building’s Grade II listing and importance. The former workplace of England’s most famous poet, William Wordsworth, the property dates back to 1700 and in 1813, William became postmaster and distributor of stamps for the county of Westmorland for a salary of £400 per year. What was his former office has undergone a major refurbishment to provide generously proportioned, luxurious accommodation for modern-day visitors.

Sitting at the top of Church Street, Wordsworth’s Stamp House is ideally placed to enjoy the delights of this scenic village where a wealth of attractions and facilities can be sampled on foot with little or no need to use your car. Wonderful walking can be had straight from the doorstep and our knowledgeable team are only too happy to share with you their own favourite routes to help you get the best out of your visit. Although you have everything here to properly self-cater, it’s always nice to eat out at least once during your stay. The Lakes are renowned for offering a superb collection of fine dining experiences including five Michelin Star restaurants, one of which, The Old Stamp House located almost adjacent to the apartment – booking is advisable.

  • Eleanor says:

We had a fabulous 4 days in the apartment. It’s beautifully presented with really good quality items, lovely bedding and beds and has everything you could need. The weather was very unkind to us but we’d definitely stay in this accommodation again if we visited Ambleside in the future. The positioning is so central, easy to walk anywhere in the town. I Would say there was noise from a venue at the back, I had earplugs so it didn’t bother me and it was not too late but good idea to pack earplugs. This is one of the best Airbnbs I’ve stayed in. Highly recommended

  • Jill says:

Beautiful apartment with lovely furnishings. Nice welcome touches. Great location for pubs, cafes and shops, though being in the town centre does mean it’s busier and noisier. Though this wasn’t an issue for us personally. Local dining was fantastic and definitely recommend The Old Stamp House below( book well in advance) and Lucy’s. Very accessible for all of the usual Lakes destinations. Grasmere, Coniston and Ullswater. Fabulous walks from the apartment with one being the walk upto Loughrigg Fell. We had a great week with no rain, so very blessed!! Definitely will return. Thank you.

  • Bettina says:

We had a wonderful stay at the Stamphouse. The host’s description was very accurate. The flat was very comfy & tastefully furnished. Wi-Fi was excellent, beds comfy, all spotless & everything worked well. We loved the little welcoming extra. It was so helpful to have the car parking permit. We’d really recommend a stay here in the heart of Ambleside. We’d love to return.

  • Marie says:

Apartment as described and even better than photos in my opinion, entrance great for sitting and removing boots and coats. Extremely clean and comfortable, had everything you’d need for a great stay. The parking permit was really useful, we used the Lake Road car park. You are right in the centre of Ambleside, which is fantastic, so close to all shops and restaurants, bus routes and great walks, however do expect some noise in the evenings from the pub garden at the back and the main road when you are in the bedrooms and have windows open. We’d definitely recommend!

  • Susan says:

Fabulous property in a fantastic location. Apartment decorated to high standard with extra little touches here and there. Great communication with owner. No complaints! Five Stars.

  • Anne says:

Fabulous location, lovely apartment with everything we needed. Great pubs, restaurants and walks.

Good location / property – ideal to move around! Helpful support team too!

  • Louise says:

Fab location, great to have the parking permit. Right in the heart of the action for Ambleside’s lovely restaurants (make sure you pre book!) and walks from the door. We did Ambleside to Grasmere and caught the bus back. Very clean and well appointed apartment, small kitchenette with everything you might need and plenty of cups etc. Nice ensuites with plenty of hot water for 2 adults and a child. A fantastic stay, we had such a lovely time!

  • Shine says:

One of the best places I have stayed. Excellent location and very clean rooms. We love the living room with big window right opposite a pub with good vibes, great if you like to hang out with friends. Professionally managed, with free parking permit in most areas around the lake!

  • Jordan says:

Was a perfect spot right beside two pubs. Great location to be in Ambleside and a really cute spot.

  • Irina says:

Well located property, convenient for the Lake District

  • Georgia says:

Lovely apartment in a perfect location – we loved sitting in the window watching the world go by after a day of walking on the fells. Dropping off luggage and then parking in the local car park with the permit was a breeze. It can get a little noisy at night with people leaving the pubs and restaurants and rubbish being taken out at the end of the night but considering the location it was surprisingly quiet. Overall we were very happy with the stay and would definitely return in the future!

  • Coral says:

Nicely appointed apartment in central Ambleside. there can be a little noise at the rear when adjoining restaurant is closing with bottle bin being emptied or staff chat as they linger outside but this is for a short period before midnight. communication with rental agency was prompt and friendly. we enjoyed our stay.

  • Durr says:

Great place to stay. Fantastic location, right in the centre of town. Spacious, clean and well equipped! We loved it!

  • Cornée says:

The spot is ideal for exploring the Lake District. The apartment is clean and spacious.

  • Alison says:

    Fantastic location lovely little apartment

  • Gerry says:

What a fantastic location. The apartment was perfect and exactly what we would expect from the details provided. We loved being central in Ambleside. We didn’t need to move the car all weekend! Restaurants, pubs, cinemas and walks all literally on our doorstep! Is the best weekend we’ve had in the Lake District!

  • Kirsten says:

Excellent location, didn’t need to use the car at all. Property was clean, lovely decor and well equipped. Even though the surrounding area was quite busy and we were opposite a pub, inside the property it was surprisingly quiet. We had a wonderful stay and would recommend the property with no hesitation

  • Jane says:

Great location, well equipped, spotless and beautifully styled. The parking permit supplied was an absolute bonus too. Would thoroughly recommend.

  • Michelle says:

We loved our week in The Old Stamp House! It is tastefully and comfortably decorated throughout with everything you need to enjoy your stay in this spacious and characterful apartment. The location is great for easy access to everything that the area has to offer. During our stay we enjoyed a boat trip to Wray Castle, a trip to Brock Hole, bouldering at the climbing wall, Go Ape, a walk up Laughrig Fell, Ambleside playpark, kayaking on the lake and on our wettest day, the pizza movie deal at Zafrellis! The parking permit that comes with the apartment is great, it was busy in the car parks but we always managed to get a space, mostly in Lake Road car park. Unloading and loading the car on the street outside was fine too. There is also a good selection of card and board games in the house. The Prosecco and milk on arrival were a nice touch. Check in and check out was easy. We would definitely recommend a stay at this lovely property!

  • Karen Bourhill says:

Beautiful apartment, right in the heart of Ambleside. You couldn’t get better. Directly opposite a fab little pub and many restaurants. Although in town center this little gem is still very quiet. Décor is fabulous and stylish. You can tell this has been a labour of love for owners Everything is perfect to a tee. Can’t wait to go back.

  • Stuart says:

We absolutely loved your flat, so perfectly located and furnished throughout. It has everything u need for your stay and is right in the centre of Ambleside. Michelle was an excellent host, with great communication and instructions – the self check in couldn’t have been simpler. All the extra touches – the prosecco, dishwasher + tablets, washing machine/dryer + the parking permit all made our stay even more comfortable and relaxed

  • Rebecca says:

What an incredible location and restful space. Will come again!
