Original character and charm
This pretty whitewashed Lakeland cottage dates back to the 18th century and sits beneath the slopes of Wansfell in one of the oldest parts of the bustling village of Ambleside. Wendin Cottage has retained much of its original character and charm displayed by a wealth of beams throughout and deep-set windows but has been brought right up to date with the addition of quality, modern facilities to ensure a comfortable stay, whatever time of you come to visit.
Just a few minutes walk from the village, Wendin Cottage is well placed to enjoy the delights that bustling Ambleside has to offer. The high street is well stocked with interesting galleries and gift shops and those foodies among you will delight in the choice of international and award-winning cuisine available in such a small village. Wendin Cottage is a superb base for walkers as numerous high and low-level routes, including some famous ‘must bag’ Wainwrights, can be explored right from the door.
From the front of the building
Enter into a traditional, neat sitting room with oak flooring, beamed ceiling, dining table and wood-burning stove which makes for a super focal point. The modern, well-fitted kitchen to rear has a good range of appliances and direct access to the outside.
An open tread wooden staircase leads to the first floor where you’ll find a romantic kingsize bedroom with a oak frame king size bed, pretty décor and TV/DVD. The contemporary bathroom next door offers a deep spa bath, perfect for a long soak after a day walking the fells, a separate shower cubicle, basin and WC.
Parking for one small car can be had right outside the front of Wendin Cottage. To the rear, you’ll find a neat sitting-out area with table and chairs provided. There’s a useful outbuilding where you’ll find the washer/dryer, a freezer and a really handy Peko drying cabinet, ideal for those outdoorsy folk among you.

Fantastic stay in Ambleside, the cottage was warm, clean and perfectly located.
Beautiful, cosy cottage just a 2 minute walk from Ambleside village centre. Easy communication from the host and extremely fast responses. We arrived to a lovely bottle of wine on the table and found the folder full of instructions for each appliance extremely helpful. The drying cupboard in the outdoor building was extremely helpful after all our long rainy walks. Perfect location for meals out and amazing walks. Loved every moment. We have recommended the cottage to lots of people already. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
The “Wendy Cottage” was clean, compact, well presented with good modern kitchen facilties. Location was a short walk into the town of Ambleside and a good location to base yourself for the Lake District. I had a very enjoyable holiday.
This is the second time we have stayed here and fell back in love when we opened the door. Lovely house, perfect for me, my partner and our dog. Had an amazing relaxing holiday, can do many a walk from the doorstep and a few minutes walk from the shops and restaurants. The spa bath being the highlight of my stay! Prosecco and cake left for our arrival was a lovely touch. Would undoubtedly stay again.
Fab place to stay. Lots of good walks, dog friendly in most places. Lots of pubs/restaurants near by. Would definitely come back to Ambleside.
We’ve just got home from an amazing week away in Wendin Cottage. It has been the most perfect little base for our week exploring the Lakes ticking off Wainwrights. Everything was just spot on. From the lovely bottle of wine for when we arrived to the super convenient drying cabinet which was extremely helpful. The spa bath was also a popular one with my girlfriend who was in need of some recovery after our walks. The bed was ridiculously comfortable and we slept amazingly all week. The location was perfect with just a 5 minute walk into the centre of Ambleside and great access to the lovely local pubs.
We have absolutely loved this place and we can’t wait to come back.

Wendin Cottage was the perfect base for us to explore the Lake District from. The space was clean and comfortable, set in a very quiet area just up the road from Ambleside which is a lovely town with every amenity we needed. The kitchen was fitted and stocked with all the basics needed to cook at home (although you won’t run out of great places to eat out in town!), and the bed was very comfy after days of walking around the Lakes. We loved our stay and couldn’t recommend Wendin more highly.
Great place in handy location with easy walk to Ambleside shops and pubs etc, well set up for walkers with drying cabinet a big plus! Warm and cozy, I would recommend!

We are part way through our week in this lovely cottage . It has absolutely everything you could need and is ideal for a couple . We have stayed in many cottages over the years and this is such good value . Brilliant location – very very quiet but an easy 5 min walk into Ambleside with all the bars & restaurants. So impressed we have just booked it for another week in June

Location is exellent, a short walk to the lake and the many pubs, restaurants, cafes. The accomodation is small but perfectly fine for a couple. Nice bonus of a Spa bath which we used a lot; very relaxing after a day out. Thoroughly recomended for sure.
A lovely little stay on the outskirts of Ambleside. The property had everything you need for a week away and more, most notably a spa bath and hot box to dry clothes. A short walk into the town and picturesque walks from your door, I would highly recommend this property.
Wendin Cottage is a rare gem that has everything you need for a stay in the Lakes. Really central, with parking and modern interior but loads of character too. Particularly liked the courtyard for al fresco dining. If you’re a couple looking for a great base, this is perfect.
Just returned from a wonderful week in the Wendin Cottage, it is charming inside with all the amenities listed, It is very small but ideal for a couple and a dog there is a small parking space out the front the whole place was spotlessly clean in an excellent location.One Direction will take you into the town and the other direction will take it to the lake all very easy to walk .Would definitely recommend this property and will definitely stay again could not Fort Lakeland Retreats they were absolutely excellent from start to finish
