superbly appointed, quality retreat set against a beautiful backdrop and SLEEPING 14

Set against a glorious backdrop of the Old Man of Coniston and Yewdale Fell, Thwaite House boasts an enviable position on the fringes of Coniston, one of the few remaining true villages within the South Lakes.

Distant views of Coniston Water and her surrounding fell range can be enjoyed from most rooms of the house, the lake and village a mostly level and manageable 10 minute walk from the property. At the bottom of the drive you’ll find the newly named and refurbished Coniston Inn, the first of many watering holes also serving great food throughout the day and into the evening. The Co-op superstore is well stocked for all your grocery needs and if you fancy a night off cooking duties, grab yourself a pizza from another new outlet, Enzo’s.

Wonderfully detached, this imposing Victorian residence has undergone a complete renovation and sits proudly in ¼ acre of mature gardens, set mostly to lawn with outbreaks of native planting, mature trees and shrubs and ample areas to picnic and enjoy the Lakeland fresh air and more of that stunning view.

  • Anila says:

Great place to stay at. All the amenities were great and the kitchen was equipped with high end dishes. Place had a coffee machine which was great. The place is walking distance from everywhere and extremely close to the lake as well. The rooms are extremely spacious and clean. Would definitely recommend staying here.

  • Satchi says:

Thwaite House has an amazing amount of space. The place is fabulous, and is furnished to a high standard. Very conveniently located next to Coniston. We spent a week of quiet family time at Thwaite house, and hiking around the lakes – and we throughly enjoyed it. Would book the place again without a second thought.

  • Andrew Stickland says:

Thwaite House is a wonderful place in a beautiful setting with fabulous views over Coniston water. The extensive grounds make it feel very private yet it is only a short walk to Coniston village. The building has, obviously, been recently refurbished to a very high standard with contemporary fittings and modern appliances throughout. However, a traditional feel, worthy of such a grand house, has still been maintained.

We spent our time walking Wainwrights and paddleboarding on Coniston’s lovely clear water. Returning home to Thwaite was a joy. Everything is so well thought out. The side entrance has a large utility/boot room ideal for disrobing. This leads to the lovely, big, kitchen, welcoming and functional, such as, having two dishwashers.

We had some fantastic dinners at the big, wooden, kitchen table after which we sank into the sofas in the lounge around the wood-stove fire. The kids took to their own lounge next door, so everybody was happy. Finally, our bed was so comfortable and linen so nice that one could only have the best of dreams.

We would highly recommend this property and look forward to returning. (July 2020)

  • Hugo says:

A spacious and peaceful house with magnificent views. A perfect place to unwind, to spend time with friends, or use as a base to explore the beautiful surroundings. Would highly recommend.

  • Isaac says:

Thwaite house is an amazing place to stay with stunning views and spacious rooms. It is located right next to the breathtaking Conniston lake and village, with many great walks and mountains to climb. The house is large and good looking inside and out with a big garden. Overall I would 100% stay here again, five star.

  • Martin says:

“What a wonderful house. Perfectly located in a countryside location with a pub at the end of the driveway and walking distance into town (Coniston). We had deer in the garden and we could walk to the water sports centre and rent paddle boards and canoes. The house itself is charming and has been thoughtfully decorated to a very high standard. Beds and bedding supplied were very comfortable. Although it has all modern conveniences, period features have been preserved and add to the unique atmosphere. The enormous kitchen is fully equipped with everything you can imagine needing. House comes highly recommended.
