A lake lovers’ paradise. You can’t stay closer to lake Windermere than this without a houseboat! Whether you’re stepping into the lake for a morning swim, paddle board, or canoe (supplied in the jetty storage area), or if you want a more laid-back breakfast on the decking, when you’re this close to the water, the views are unbeatable. On every floor, Silver Quay makes the most of its location, with ceiling-high windows and, on the first floor, a balcony large enough for everyone to gather on for BBQs and drinks in the evening sun. You can’t help but unwind and feel connected to the water from this stunning vantage point where you’re free to wave as the steamers pass in the distance. Even once the sun goes down, why not get the telescope out for some star gazing?
With deep plush sofas in the open-plan living spaces bring the views into the room. The kitchen serves as another great focal area to gather, with space for cooking and seating for sharing meals.
For a sound night’s sleep, all the bedrooms are excellently furnished, with easy access to bathrooms for all. The bedroom on the lower floor opens out directly onto the jetty and decking, with outdoor seating available just outside your room.
You’re just a couple of minutes’ easy stroll from Waterhead with Ambleside YHA just around the corner or, for more upmarket fare, there’s Blue Smoke just a pleasant walk south along the edge of the lake. Between these two bars, there are few places better for a drink with a view, right on the lakeshore. A little further along the shore, you’ll find the ferry terminal if you’d like to explore more of the lake. Our last tip, for those hot summer days, the Waterhead Coffee Shop does a great chocolate-dipped ice cream!
Around a 20-minute walk from the front door and you’ll be in Ambleside itself. If you take the top road into town, there’s the opportunity for some garden inspiration when stopping off at Hayes Garden World. In Ambleside itself, for a real treat, there’s the world-famous, Michelin-star Old Stamp House Restaurant (You’ll usually need to book with plenty of notice) or, for a more relaxed dining experience from the same owners, Kysty is tucked up a small street not far from the very centre. There’s also ample shopping, with local crafts and delicacies available all around town, with Lake District Farm Shop being a good one-stop shop, and Kindred Spirits being a favourite for gifts for any fans of a unique tipple. Then there are the obligatory outdoor shops, of course, all the better to help keep you warm and comfy while exploring the fells.
Entering from the private parking at the front of the property, between a small wooded area and an old boathouse, you almost wouldn’t know Silver Quay held such tantalising secrets!
Within the front door, there’s an area for getting out of your outdoor gear, with a sizable bathroom off to one side with a large bath with a hand shower, WC, and hand basin.
Moving into the main living area, you are greeted by a long room framing large floor-to-ceiling windows at the far end that lead out onto the large balcony overlooking the lake. This private outdoor space has ample seating for all in your party, with a sun shade and BBQ close at hand for those bright summer days.
In the open-plan living space itself, you’ll find a large kitchen island with a breakfast bar and dining area. There’s a fridge and freeze to keep all your supplies fresh, and plenty of work surface for cooking up a storm for the whole party, with stools to one side, and a charging point close to hand, to ensure it’s a comfortable social experience. At the end of the island, you’ll find a dining area with table and bench seating for sit-down meals overlooking the lake and onto Wray Castle.
At the far end of the room, from where you come in, you’ll find yourself in the lounge area, surrounded by cosy sofas, a TV, feature fireplace, and wrapped on two sides by some of the best views of Lake Windermere you’re likely to get while sitting inside! There’s even a telescope for admiring the scenery and star-lit evening skies.
Downstairs from the living space, you’ll find the first two bedrooms. The first is a secluded King-size with a TV and dressing area. On the way to the second bedroom, you’ll find a bathroom with a walk-in shower, WC, and hand basin. Further along, there’s a glass door leading to an outside storage area where you can access 2 paddle boards and an inflatable kayak. These are for your use during your stay but, please do so with care and at your own risk. This area also serves as access to the private decking and jetty leading you out onto the lake. Just through the gate at the end of this storage area, you’ll find a covered outdoor shower area and furniture for sitting out in the area under the cover of the main balcony.
The second king-size bedroom is level with the private jetty, with floor-to-ceiling patio doors that look out over the lake, and that can be opened up to access the jetty area.
Moving up a floor from the living area you’ll find another three bedrooms. To the back of the house, towards the lake, you find the super-king room with an en-suite bathroom. To make the most of the location, this room’s end wall is made up entirely of glass, with sliding doors at the centre to allow you to let in the full vista from safely behind a glass railing. The room also has a handy 2 seater sofa and a table and chair to sit beside the window for those needing a little quiet time to themselves. The en-suite bathroom has a walk-in shower, WC, and twin hand basins.
At the front of the property is a further king-size room, with a child-friendly twin next door. These last two rooms share a bathroom with a walk-in shower, WC, and hand basin.
