Riverside Lodge sits right on the banks of the River Rothay and is a mere 5 minutes level walk from the village centre making it a superb venue for a gathering of family and friends, whatever time of year you choose to visit Ambleside. The sight and sound of water is so soothing and this stretch of the Rothay is home to an abundance of wildlife; herons, ducks and even an otter.
Those water babies among you will enjoy getting into the river from the door and paddling your kayak or paddleboard down to the Lake whilst anglers will please pleased to know that this stretch of water is outside of WADAA control and although an Environmental Agency rod licence is required between the season, 15th March to 30th September, no additional fishing licence is required. Perhaps you’ll catch your own supper!
Dating back to the 1700s and one of three stunning characterful properties under the same ownership, Riverside Lodge shares in a delightful lawned picnic area right at the water’s edge. Accessed via a footbridge from the parking area, the entrance is at the rear and into a stone flagged snug with exposed beams and games room with pool table, a great way to spend an evening. Incredibly, one of the flagstones bears an inscription noting that none other than Bonnie Prince Charlie rested here – now there’s a claim to fame!
The main living space is on the first floor, traditionally furnished with deep cushioned leather seating arranged around a wood burning stove, large dining space and fully fitted and functioning kitchen, well thought out for a larger party. On the top floor sit three excellent bedrooms, one kingsize with en-suite shower room and two full size twin rooms sharing in a luxurious bathroom with deep bath, separate shower cubicle, handbasin and WC.
Riverside Lodge is dog friendly so your four legged friends can join in the fun too – and what dog doesn’t love a paddle?
Secure storage is available for sports equipment if required and there’s private, off road parking for three cars.
Please note: The access to the property is from the main parking area and via a private footbridge, unloading at the door only.

Lovely house right on the outskirts of Ambleside. Offered a great base to get into town and explore the rest of the lakes. House was easily big enough for 6 adults and the pool table was a welcome addition Thank you
We had a brilliant time. Ideal location for exploring the lakes. The accommodation was very homely and comfortable. Loved the garden with the river running through it. We will be booking again. Highly recommended. Thank you.
We had a lovely relaxing stay. There was plenty of room for our family of 5 and dog to relax and enjoy our weekend break. The house was well equipped, very clean and had lovely décor. We particularly enjoyed playing pool in the evenings and have fun by the river with our dog. A great location!
Overall a great stay in The Lakes. The house is situated just off a main road but is still nice and quiet, and it’s an easy 5-10 minute walk into Ambleside. There’s lots of space in the house and the snooker/pool table was a great addition to the holiday. The garden alongside the river is a real bonus too. The only thing to note is there’s one bathroom and one en suite all located on the top floor, just something to be mindful of for a larger party. The kitchen is well-eqipped and there’s a washing machine and dryer too.
Really nice large dog friendly cottage, close to Ambleside centre. Comfy beds, great games room and log burners.
Lovely place with a great outdoor space. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back. Thank you.
Another fabulous stay at Riverside Lodge. New walks tried, some more strenuous than others! We love this house and have booked to come back again next year. The heron has been back each day and blue tits and mallards, but the highlight was watching the badger on the river bank. Thanks again to Lakeland Retreats and Mr & Mrs Freedman!
Yet another wonderful stay at Riverside Lodge despite the weather – it did not dampen our spirits and we’ve already booked our return visit in 2023.
Excellent accommodation and location, thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be looking to come back again in the future
Riverside Lodge surpasses any photographs or descriptions- it’s a beautiful lodge , spotlessly clean, fabulous kitchen , bathrooms , plenty of space , in a ridiculously good location . The setting is stunning too . Great communication with the hosts as we were there during the storm !
HI just to say a huge thanks for creating this wonderful accommodation in such a great location . The care, energy and effort that has been put into making this a special place is obvious and a credit to the owner. From the modern bathrooms, well appointed bedrooms, period style living and dining room, games room, snug and drying/laundry room, this place for me made our short break really special. And the Christmas decorations and virtual welcome pack was icing on the cake. And loved the reference to Bonnie Prince Charlie!
We had a great stay in Ambleside. The property has a lovely peaceful setting and looks even better in real life than in the pictures.
Nice big house lovely gardens the games room came in handy for my husband with the football being on. Very handy for walking into Ambleside.
What a lovely relaxing place to stay. The 3 storeys kept us fit ha ha. The garden is a lovely place to relax but if want the town it’s literally a 5 min walk. Beds are super comfy and bedrooms a good size. Plenty of space in the house so don’t feel like on top of one another. Great having the pool table little added bonus. Would definitely book here again. Xxx
Riverside Lodge is set in a beautiful location just a few minute’s walk from the village. It’s a unique and historic house with 2 small holiday lets next to it. The back of the house has stunning views of the river and a lovely private garden to relax in. The house is spacious, well equipped and comfortable with excellent wi-fi and powerful hot showers. There’s a TV in every bedroom and two others downstairs. It was a great spot to walk either into the village or through the fields, along the river to Low Wood for the water sports.
A great place for a week’s stay. So much to do around Ambleside and Grasmere. The property has a great location and being near the river is idyllic whilst not too far from the village. Highly recommended.
Great location and beautiful riverside setting
Big but cosy with beautiful river views
Great location with a great view. Hosts are really helpful too
This is a lovely cottage which I have stayed at many times and will come back again. Very homely and a wonderful location. 5*

Riverside Lodge is a spacious, well equipped property with excellent walking on Loughrigg Fell on the doorstep. It is less than 10 minutes walk to the centre of Ambleside and during the ten days of our visit we only used our car once. We especially enjoyed watching kingfishers and gooseanders on the river Rothay from the lounge window.
Fab house in an ideal location. Lovely river view. Good communication, lots of handy information to look through. Facilities including the games room was great fun.”
Stunning location. Welcoming, adventurous and extremely spacious. Can highly recommend. Pool table was fab!
Beautiful home, lovely welcome basket, gorgeous setting, ideal location for restaurants, walks, boat rides on Lake Windermere. Easy to organise and communicate with the host company as well
Great place to stay- fab location 5 mins away from shops/restaurants etc. Huge space. Clean. Beautiful gardens by the river.
Stayed for 6 nights and really enjoyed the location and the view. It was great to have a morning coffee looking at the river for our daily visits from the heron and river otters. It was quiet, spacious, comfortable, and clean. Highly recommended.
The photos do not do this place justice!! So beautiful, amazing location and a real home feel. You will not want to leave!
Fantastic and charming location only a few minutes walk away from Ambleside and the town high street. The house was clean, spacious with a modern finish and a lovely welcoming touch that made us feel right at home. Communication was always quick and helpful throughout and we loved the hamper of wine and cookies when we arrived! We would definitely recommend to friends!
We had a wonderful long weekend at Riverside Lodge. The house is in a stunning location with lots of wildlife on the river outside the window. It’s very comfy with a well equipped kitchen. We recommend swimming in Rydal Water and walking up Tod Crag.
We had a fantastic time staying at the riverside lodge. It was a group of 6 of us and we had ample amounts of space. It felt very homely and is well equipped. We didn’t have a car but were able to get everywhere by foot – both dinner and some nice hikes. The beds are very comfortable as are the sofas. We had a lot of fun playing pool and would have loved to get more time to sit in the lovely and quiet outdoor area had the weather been better.”
We had the most fantastic 2 weeks ar Riverside Lodge. The house was fabulous. Even with 6 people (adults) staying one weekend, it still felt incredibly spacious. The ground floor area was perfect for the dogs, and the standard of the sleeping accommodation was exceptional. The location was perfect for active walkers and the outside space was a real bonus. We will definitely be returning.
I had high expectations for our trip to the Lake District and spent a lot of time looking for the right place. Riverside Lodge was even better that I hoped! The welcome book was VERY helpful. Read it right away! And the bottle of wine much appreciated! That view out the living room window made me stop and appreciate where I was every time I walked in the room! The back yard was lovely with the river running by. We didn’t spend much time there as town was just a 5-10 minutes walk in one direction and Lake Windermere about the same in the other direction. And walks going off from either place. We had only 4 people staying in the house, so really it was far more space than we needed. Everything worked as expected – stove, fridge, microwave, dishwasher, hot water, showers, washer/dryer. There was even a French press coffee maker. No regrets. We had a wonderful time.
This house in this setting is absolutely fantastic! We stayed there with our three boys, 12, 10 & 6, for three nights in October and we had a wonderful time. The host, Michelle, is local and she cannot do enough to please you. The house is spotlessly clean from top to bottom and everything worked as it should do. I suppose if you had to push me to find a negative, and you really would have to push me hard! I would say that for older guests you would have to cross what could be quite a slippery wooden bridge (across the river) to get from the car parking area to the front door if it were raining, and that, as is so often the case with these gorgeous town houses, the accommodation is over three levels and the only toilets are all on the top floor. That really is it though. It is one of the loveliest homes we’ve ever stayed in actually, great value for money too. We will certainly be returning.
Great place in a great location
