Olde Worlde Lakeland Cottage, Located 50 Yards From The Shores Of Coniston Water

Just five and a half miles south of the traditional village of Coniston at Old Brown Howe, Potter’s Wheel occupies an idyllic location just 50 yards from the South Western shores of Coniston Water. Set in almost a quarter of natural woodland, this is a rather quirky, gem of a cottage offering bags of character, perfect for a romantic break or, dare we say, honeymoon. Leaded windows, beamed ceilings and a rock face wall in the lounge give a nod to the age of this ancient cottage, the room warmed by a traditional wood-burning stove for those colder evenings. The spiral staircase that leads to the first floor further adds to the charm of this quality accommodation, beautifully presented with excellent facilities and perfectly chosen accessories to blend the old with the new.

With direct access to the Lakeshore, keen fishermen, open water swimmers and paddleboarders will revel in heading straight to the water at every opportunity, the beach area perfect for a picnic while the water laps at your feet and taking in the stunning views along the Lake.

Nearby Coniston retains a very traditional, village feel and is set against a breathtaking backdrop of Coniston Old Man and the surrounding fell range. There’s a good selection of facilities in the village, The Co-op Superstore is well stocked for all your grocery needs and if you fancy a night off cooking duties, grab yourself a pizza from Enzo’s or a hearty bar meal at The Coniston Inn.

A Wealth Of Original Features Blended Effortlessly With 21st Century Quality Facilities

From the parking area, walk down to the cottage and into the charming living space where you’re greeted by leaded windows and a rock face wall which is home to the wood-burning stove. There’s SMART TV, though the actual signal can be bad in these rural areas at times. From here, step through to the dining kitchen, a delightful space with a woodland view and modern, quality appliances of dishwasher, fridge freezer, electric double oven, hob, microwave and washer/dryer. Along the hallway with a handy cupboard for storing your outdoor weather gear, there’s a twin bedroom prettily furnished and decorated and enjoying glimpses of Coniston Water and the house bathroom with a corner bath with shower over the same, basin and WC.

The first floor is accessed by way of a steep, narrow,  open-tread spiral staircase from the lounge, and is home to a romantic double bedroom with a four-poster bed, pine floors, and coordinating furniture and décor. The bedroom retains the original Lakeland stone steps to the outside, handy for bringing luggage in if required but do take care, especially in the wet.

Outside, there’s a grassed open plan garden, gently sloping in parts leading down to the Lakeshore and private woodland, shared with the neighbouring cottages for you to explore.

Parking for one car is available at the cottage and can be found at top of the drive and then to the right hand side, down a short slope. Guests are welcome to park directly in front of the cottage temporarily, whilst loading and unloading their belongings.

  • Fiona says:

We stayed at the beginning of July at Potter’s Wheel. It was exceptionally clean and a perfect little bolt hole in the Lakes. It’s location next to Coniston is wonderful. The owners also very kindly left milk in the fridge and bottle of Prosecco on the table. Thank you!

  • Kate says:

Absolutely wonderful place if you are looking for a retreat. Quiet, lovely neighbours and a great beach onto the Lake. Would definitely stay again. Thank you

  • Katharine says:

Just back from a great stay at Potter’s Wheel. The cottage is very clean and comfortable and the location was great with walks up onto Blawith Common right from the door, and access down a path to the lakeshore – great for swimming, paddle boarding and kayaking.
