Walkers and adventurers will revel in the wonderful cycling, walks, and waterborne opportunities close by. Those who prefer a gentler pace can happily potter around the cobbled streets of nearby Hawkshead, take a leisurely stroll around beautiful Esthwaite Water or Tarn Hows, and enjoy refreshments at The Drunken Duck on the way back.

Peacock Cottage is blessed with a private patio and beautifully manicured garden to the front, awash with colour in the warmer months, complete with peacock topiary and just the spot for an alfresco meal, a BBQ perhaps or for reading the Sunday papers before heading out on your travels for the day.

  • Ben says:

Peacock Cottage is in a idyllic location in Outgate where there is only peace and quiet. We stayed as a family of five, plus our dog Tova to have a short break in the Lakes. The cottage itself has everything you ever need and is much bigger than any of the photographs. With the short distance to Hawkshead, Coniston and Ambleside it gives easy access to anything you ever need. We would love to stay again and couldn’t recommend it enough.

  • Sarah says:

I can highly recommend a stay in Peacock Cottage, the area is beautiful and tranquil and the cottage itself is lovely and was beyond our expectations. Beds very comfortable and lovely bathrooms so many we felt spoilt. The lounge area was so cosy with the log burner and the kitchen/ dining room was a lovely place to gather and spend time together.

  • Matt says:

Beautiful cottage and location and all you need for a weekend away in the Lakes; beautiful walks from your front door, the village pub next door and cosy wood burner when you return home. Can’t wait to come back!

  • Christian says:

This is a very well equipped, clean and comfortable cottage. Plenty of space to relax, outside and in. The fittings and fixtures are of good quality and I didn’t notice anything lacking. Has the extra convenience of a bus stop and a pub less than 60 paces away! Although adjacent to small road to Hawkshead, there was only a small amount of traffic noise in commuting hours. Lovely walks straight out of the door.

  • Marie says:

We’ve just enjoyed a fabulous week’s stay at Peacock Cottage. It is located in an idyllic setting with fabulous walks from the doorstep. We enjoyed day’s out to Hawkshead, Wray’s Casstle and Ambleside. The Windermere Cruise was well worth doing too. This spacious property has everything you need away from home: beautiful garden spaces, log fires, very dog friendly and tasteful furnishings throughout. The welcome pack provided was an unexpected bonus and the additional extras such as the sauna and the fantastic pub next door made our stay just perfect! Thank you.

  • Dawn Cavagan says:

We are a family of 5 adults with a baby and a dog and enjoyed a fabulous stay at Peacock cottage in June. The cottage is beautiful and very spacious. A lovely welcome pack on arrival too!
The gardens were fantastic too especially with the good weather we had.
The pub next door does great food!
There are lovely walks into Hawkshead and also to Wray castle on lake windermere.
Both very accessible with a pram and a dog!
We would certainly look to book this cottage again!
We have used Lakeland retreats several times now and have always had immaculate properties every time!
Thanks again for a lovely stay and sorry the review took so long!

  • Ruth says:

Lovely cottage in a great location for exploring. Lots of space and an enclosed garden for the dog. Pub next door did great food!

  • Imogen says:

Wonderful and larger than it looks cottage surrounded by lovely gardens. Great location too.

  • Jill J says:

The most wonderful two week stay at Peacock Cottage. The cottage was so well equipped and spotlessly clean. It was my husbands 70th Birthday so it was great to have our family altogether. The weather was mostly kind to us and we enjoyed long walks from the door and board games at the table in the evenings.
I would highly recommend Peacock Cottage to anyone. We look forward to returning.

  • Stevie says:

Fantastic cottage, couldn’t ask for anything more. Great location, spacious and clean cottage with amazing views. We had a great time and wouldn’t hesitate to return.

  • Nicholas says:

The house was absolutely perfect and I think as a couple of other reviews have stated, the pictures don’t quite do it justice!

  • Nicola says:

Lovely weeks stay at Peacock Cottage. The house is cosy and warm and tastefully decorated. Outgate is a great location for exploring the lakes and Ambleside has some fabulous restaurants. We certainly intend returning to the lakes – so many beautiful places to walk!

  • Linda says:

Just arrived back from a very enjoyable 3 night break in Peacock Cottage. The Cottage was absolutely gorgeous, So cosy & tastefully decorated. The beds were very comfy & very spacious. The kitchen had absolutely everything you need & lovely mature gardens. The Sauna was nice to relax after a nice day sightseeing in Windermere. The Pub literally right next door was really friendly & served a nice Sunday Lunch. I would definitely recommend to friends & family. Linda Hughes North Wales

  • Katie Guest says:

Our second time at Peacock Cottage. The perfect comfortable, peaceful ,relaxing place in which to unwind. Logs for the wood burners were very welcome as was the bottle of Peacock Wine ! You don’t have to walk very far to see wonderful Lakeland views. The staff at Lakeland Retreats were very efficient and polite when we had reason to call them . I fully recommend this spacious cottage but don’t book it when I want to go next !

  • Jo says:

We stayed at the lovely Peacock Cottage for a week with our two grown up daughters, our two Golden Retrievers and a friend who was due to take part in the ‘Lakes in a day’ 50 mile run. We originally picked the cottage as it was approximately half way on the race course and decided to still come even after the race was cancelled. The cottage is cosy and comfortable with good quality furnishing and a very well equipped kitchen. There was plenty of logs for the log burner and the gardens were perfect to let the dogs out into. The back garden gets the morning sunshine and the front garden, which is very secluded, even though it’s on the road side, enjoyed the evening sun. In the summer, I imagine both gardens are very enjoyable spaces. It was a bit too damp for us to sit out this week. The house is set back from the road and has room for one car in the drive which is a bit of a squeeze for a big car and one car space is available just outside of the gates, off the road. Outgate is a delightful little village with an amazing pub, The Outgate Inn, serving very good food. The staff were very welcoming and their Covid procedures felt very safe. There’s also a cottage up the road opposite selling home made cakes, flapjack and jams etc from a little box outside of their house. Very welcome snacks when out walking. There are a couple of lovely walks from the lane at the right hand side of the pub with stunning views and well maintained pathways. Outgate seems very quiet and tucked away from the bustle of Ambleside and Windermere, but it’s only 15 mins to Booths Supermarket in Windermere, which is a good upmarket store, similar to Waitrose. Peacock Cottage is managed by an agency, Lakeland Retreats, who were excellent to communicate with and were very helpful with local information. I didn’t really want to write a good review, as I didn’t want this charming little cottage to be booked up when I wanted to go again! But I’m not that selfish and I’m sure it would be loved by most people visiting this wonderful part of the world. Thank you Michelle and team for a wonderful holiday. I can’t wait to come again

  • Kathleen says:

  • David says:

The cottage was all we’d hoped for, and was so peaceful. This allowed us to kick back for the weekend. Would book again. All the Best, Neil

  • Beatrice says:

Gorgeous cottage, really well equipped and in a great location – a few minutes drive from Ambleside but also feeling lovely and remote. The pub next door serves yummy honest pub grub and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The cottage was really cosy and spacious with great amenities and really comfy mattresses on the beds. It had a lovely lived in feel. The welcome hamper was very much appreciated, thank you. We stayed here with some friends and their toddler and it was plenty big enough for us all plus all of our outdoor clobber! We are so pleased we found this wonderful place and hope to come back again soon. Thank you!

  • Paul says:

A lovely cottage in a perfect location. Highly recommended

  • Martin says:

Really enjoyed Peacocks, it is a fantastic cottage and great for the 6 of us. Great location for our few days, unfortunately the weather wasn’t so great but we still found lots to do in Ambleside, Hawkshead and Grasmere. The Outgate inn was really good, staff fantastic and food really good

  • Sue says:

A great place to stay – it feels like a home that is loved rather than a sterile holiday cottage.

  • Nicole says:

The property was in the perfect location for us. Right next to the Outgate inn, which was so hospitable! It had everything we needed, and the sauna was great especially as we had a bit of a cold rainy spell. It was nice to have a little arrival hamper. We are looking to come back and stay next tine we return to the lakes.

  • Katie says:

  • Douglas says:

We enjoyed a relaxing time in this charming cottage with lots of character. Loved the heated floors and shower in the sauna area and the tasty larder basket! Great pub next door and easy access to public walking paths. I recommend taking a small car to the lakes as the roads are very narrow.

  • Ashok says:

The cottage is in a great location for walks around the Lakes (Wray Castle, Ambleside, Grassmere), and for evenings in or for drinks / food at the Outgate Inn. Couldn’t have stayed anywhere better. The cottage was perfect and we had everything we needed for a great stay. The welcome basket with delicious food and wine was an unexpected tre

This is an exceptional cottage great location between Ambleside and Hawkshead. Walks from the door or within very easy reach. Great food next door and good local Ale and lovely wine. The cottage is well equipped and so comfortable. Parking for two cars and lovely garden. The cottage sleeps 6 and is very cosy. The added feature is a lovely sauna which was great fun with a stunning downstairs shower Highly recommend this property.

This property is incredible! Upon our arrival the whole group was spell bound by how wonderful the cottage is. The facilities are brilliant, with plenty of space and bathrooms for a group of 6 adults to socialise together and also relax individually. The sauna is a special luxury to have on a walking holiday! The location is great and we took full advantage of all the walks you can do straight from the door step. The local pub being next door was an added treat and we all got to try some of the local ales. Thanks for a great home for our weekend in the Lakes. We hope to be back again sometime!

  • Katy says:

This cottage is gorgeous, the photos don’t do it justice! Had a brilliant 3 night stay with a group of friends and would be very keen to visit again. Location is fab, just a short drive to Ambleside and the local pub next door did fantastic food. I couldn’t recommend Peacock cottage more.

  • Julie says:

We all felt instantly at home in Peacock Cottage. A lovely spacious cottage with so much character and very well equipped. After a day in the mountains the sauna was bliss. We will all be coming back! Thank you 🙂
