Situated right on the banks of the River Rothay and a mere 5 minutes level walk from the village centre, Middlebeck makes for a superb bolthole for a couple, whatever time of year you choose to visit Ambleside. The sight and sound of water is so soothing and this stretch of the Rothay is home to an abundance of wildlife; herons, ducks and even an otter.
Those water babies among you will enjoy getting into the river from the door and paddling your kayak or paddleboard down to the Lake whilst anglers will be pleased to know that this stretch of water is outside of WADAA control and although an Environmental Agency rod licence is required between the season, 15th March to 30th September, no additional fishing licence is required. Perhaps you’ll catch your own supper!
As the name suggests, the cottage sits in the middle of three properties under the same ownership, all sharing in a delightful lawned picnic area at the water’s edge. Accessed via a footbridge from the parking area, Middlebeck’s windows face towards the river, the dining table providing a front row seat! The sofas are strategically placed in front of the wood burning stove and a neat but perfectly functional kitchen will ensure you can properly self cater if you so wish.
The spacious bedroom on the first floor has a super king size bed to ensure a good night’s rest and plenty of room for a cot if you’re bringing your little one with you. There’s a powerful shower in the en-suite and of course, like most of our retreats, Middlebeck is dog friendly so your four legged friend can also join in the fun – and what dog doesn’t love a paddle?
Secure storage is available for sports equipment if required and there’s private, off road parking for two cars.
Please note: The access to the property is from the main parking area and via a private footbridge

Will definitely be returning. Bed is also so comfy that I didn’t want to get out most mornings! Ha!
Really great place to stay, great location, just a short walk in to Ambleside. Property was comfortable and clean with everything we needed for a weeks stay. Host was great with really good information provided to find the place and for things to do in the area.
We really enjoyed our stay at Middlebeck, the house was very cosy and the queen size bed was incredibly comfortable. The garden and riverside location was stunning, the perfect place for a morning cup of tea! It was also very close to the town centre and Ambleside was the perfect choice for pubs and restaurants.
Middlebeck is delightful cottage on the edge of Ambleside. Through one garden gate you are a few mins walk from all that the village has to offer. From the other side of the garden you are immediately out onto paths crossing fields toward the lake or the fells. No need to use a car the whole time you are there. But then, you may struggle to ever leave the wonderful garden, gazing at the river that meanders through the middle. It really is a little oasis.
Perfect one bedroom cottage for us in a lovely location – a quiet corner of Ambleside with seating outside next to the river. 10 min walk from centre of Ambleside and 10 mins across the fields to Waterhead. Good leaflets detailing local walks.
Lovely little place. All clean and beds were so comfy- which is just what you need after a long walk! Overall a great place and we’d definitely come back.
A very nice cottage with nice views and in a very good walking distance to Ambleside town centre. Fully recommend.
“Ideal location, walks from the cottage, 10 minute walk into centre of town
Perfect little cottage for a weekend holiday. Within easy walking distance to town as well as Ambleside Pier. The back garden is quiet with a creek running next to it. The cottage itself was lovely with a nice sitting area/kitchen and then a bedroom upstairs. Nice entrance out on to the road that has you in to town on foot in 5 minutes or so. Would definitely stay again!
Gorgeous little cottage, amazing location and beautifully clean. We had a wonderful stay here
Cozy space in a fantastic location. The bread, jam, and wine were a nice touch to welcome us. Would recommend to any couple looking for a getaway.
Nice, small apartment next to a lovely stream. It’s also next to a busy road, but the apartment is well insulated and there is not a lot of noise. At night, the road is not busy at all, so there is no problem. It’s a 10 minute walk into the Center of Ambleside, so the car can stay in the provided free parking
If you are looking for a wonderful location to spend time in the Lakes District look no further that Middledeck. Michelle had great communication with us and the hamper of local produce was unexpected but beautiful. Located within walking distance to Ambleside. Overall a wonderful holiday
Beautiful and clean cottage in a perfect location for exploring the Lake District. Very quiet location but just a short walk into Ambleside.

Super cute cottage nestled in alongside the River Rothay. It was a perfect size and had everything 2 people needed for a week. The bedroom is upstairs from the living area which is great for people who don’t go to sleep/get up at the same time. The kitchen is really well stocked with pots/pans/knives, and not just old leftovers either – good quality. The best touch was an amazing welcome hamper with food from the area and a fun Cumbria cookbook for us to try out!
I took my girlfriend to the Lake District for Valentine’s Day and asked Michelle to find some red roses the day after Valentine’s Day and she went above and beyond and came up trumps – massive thanks from me for that! Also had a nice little hamper with some treats inside.
