A true Arts and Crafts home of the time, designed by the renowned architect ‘Webster’s of Kendal‘, with generous room sizes, oak detail, a splendid return staircase and magnificent stain glass windows overlooking the Lakeland falls. Commissioned by a wealthy Liverpool family for their summer vacations away from the hustle of city living, construction was finished in 1907. It was the first house in the area to have electricity.
In recent years, another Liverpool-based family purchased and lovingly restored the sizeable Edwardian house back to its original glory. By retaining and restoring many of its earliest features, and keeping the interior design to the traditional Edwardian theme, the property has developed into an extraordinary, distinctive antique of the past and present.
Middle Reston sits just off the main route to all over the Lakes and is located 3 miles from Windermere. It sits just a short walk from the village of Staveley where you will find the award-winning More Artisan Bakery and the biggest cycle shop in the UK, Wheelbase. There are also many walking options from the door, including Reston Scar and the Kentmere Horseshoe.
Middle Reston is a stunning and unique Arts and Crafts house located in the Lake District’s National Park. The 3 storeys Edwardian house was built in 1907 as a gentlemen’s summer residence. The property is situated in a private, leafy location, with wonderfully mature and colourful gardens and grounds. The interior of the property still has many of the original quality and fine design features.
These include decorative stained-glass windows, oak panelling throughout, fine original fireplaces in almost every room and an impressive oak staircase that leads to all floors.
The ground floor offers 3 reception rooms, a large breakfast kitchen room with a double-sided log burner along with patio doors overlooking the garden. The first floor has five individual bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Middle Reston is blessed with almost 12 acres of wooded gardens which incorporate formal and natural areas, reputably designed by Mawson. It has a natural pond*, stream systems and waterfalls.
The beautifully landscaped gardens, two large patios, and seating areas are ideal for al fresco entertainment. A furnished summer house and a range of outbuildings comprising of a garage and 3 large stores. There is also the now derelict ‘Powerhouse’ a stone detached structure built at the same time as the original property from where they used to generate their own electricity.

Well what can I say ? From the minute I arrived I was in awe and in love with the stunning home that has been lovingly and tastefully restored to its former glory. This home is simply beautiful set in stunning grounds that can offer adventure ‘walks’ in its own woods, orchard and extensive gardens. Various terraces allow you to take in your surroundings, and listen to the owls twit twoo’ing. I stayed in the rose room , a beautiful and I must say, very comfortable room, I slept amazingly in the double bed! So comfortable. The bathroom I had use of is huge and fabulously decorated. The heart of the home is the amazing kitchen, which provides casual dining, stunning views of the gardens and direct access to one of the terraces. Nearby (walking distance) is the village of Stavely with must visit bakery, and Ice cream shop ! When I stayed we actually walked to Windermere and Bowness, but it’s a 10 minute drive if walking wasn’t for you. I can’t wait to be able to stay here again and would highly recommend this amazing home. If you love peace, tranquility and history then this place is for you !
What a wonderful week we had at Middle Reston. The house has been beautifully restored and retains the original character of the property. The kitchen has an amazing view of the grounds and we were lucky enough to spot numerous deers whilst exploring the grounds. There is a great walk at the back of the house which takes you into Staveley which has a lovely pub and an amazing ice cream shop in the village. The bedrooms are lovely and comfortable and the bathroom is just beautiful. This is the perfect place to explore Windermere and the South Lakes.
What a fantastic stay my family had at this beautiful house. It is in an ideal location just a short drive away from both Kendal and Windermere. You can also take a leisurely walk to the local pubs nearby Eagle & Child, The Watermill and Hawshead Brewery. The house itself is stunning with restored period features throughout and caters for everyone and everything you need. The kitchen is the heart of the home and the view from the full length windows are breathtaking, you really feel you are in your own private forest. I will be definitely be returning.
Wow! What a fantastic house. We have just spent a week at MIDDLE RESTON in STAVELEY. It is just off the main road, just before you get to Windermere, but because of the long sweeping driveway, as soon as you arrive at the house it’s like you are in the middle of a forest. The house itself is exceptional and the owners have obviously spent a lot of time restoring it whilst keeping its fantastic character. The kitchen is the heart of the house and is simply lovely, with a two sided log burner. The main bathroom is to die for and the bedrooms are stunning, especially the master. I would recommend this stunning house to everyone. We are definitely coming back. Thank you.
We have been lucky enough to stay here a couple of times, and can’t wait to return. The perfect bolthole for a Lakeland break. Honestly, the photos don’t do this stunning property justice!! It’s luxurious yet cosy, spacious yet intimate. The original features throughout the house are really interesting, and the whole place has been beautifully restored, a skilful and stylish blend of old and new. The grounds are stunning, and varied – woodland, orchard, field, a selection of terraces….
In short, a perfect base for a memorable holiday with extended family, or friends.
