Respond to Herald Cottage

  • Felicia says:

We absolutely loved staying here. It’s on 3 levels with is perfect for extra privacy if staying with different couples and if you have children. It’s a lovely quirky cottage with all the facilities that you need. Plus a sauna which is a bonus. We all felt at home and very comfortable. Only criticism was that some of the pots and pans were a bit dirty and also it would have been better to have a door on the living room due to noise to the other bedrooms downstairs. Looks like there was one which hasn’t been replaced. Otherwise great location and would definitely stay here again. Thank you.

  • Katharine says:

    Great location. Everything we needed

  • Augusta says:

We loved the location, near wonderful hiking and a number of fantastic restaurants. The house itself is spacious, comfortable, and very homey; the sauna was the cherry on top of a lovely stay!

  • Alex says:

A lovely cottage, location couldn’t be better

  • Catherine says:

Great location. Lovely house with everything you need and more. Sauna was a big plus.

  • Drew says:

Great location. Exiting cars not for the faint hearted. Weekend parking at primary school convenient. Great coffee and welcome at Freshers Café. Matthew’s Bistro excellent – booking a must.

  • Chris says:

Great spot for enjoying the Great North Swim. Michelle and her team were prompt in all comms, and the house has a well stocked kitchen, comfortable beds, nice bed linen, and a great sauna. The parking area requires sharp parking skills :-). Neighbourhood perfect and did everything on foot. Thank you!

  • Mach says:

Very nice stay, everything clean and comfortable. Location was great, and communication was top notch. Just a note to reiterate what is said in the description but parking is very tight. We had a seven passenger van, and it didn’t fit into the small courtyard. We found public parking which wasn’t too pricey, especially when you realize you could park at the Lake Road car park (not the others) and pay only 1 pound per day if you get your ticket before about 8 AM (9 AM?)

  • Lesley says:

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Herald Cottage. We would definitely stay there again & highly recommend it to anyone staying in Ambleside. The property has everything we needed and we really appreciated the personal touch of a bottle of wine, milk, etc on our arrival.

  • Mary says:

The cottage is in a perfect location which meant we didn’t need to use our cars once we arrived. Our party had 3 cars so one needed to be parked in a nearby car park but it was for a very reasonable weekly rate. The cottage itself is laid out well and in a way that the group could still have privacy when they desired. Lovely walks nearby and i would recommend the one up to the waterfall.

  • Alison says:

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Herald Cottage. The accommodation is roomy and functional. Living area is cosy and the bathrooms were very updated. Parking was a bit of a challenge – and the driveway to the cottage is very narrow. However, the home’s central location made it worthwhile.

  • Jennifer says:

Brilliant holiday home we absolutely loved our stay and would recommend to anyone.

  • Jennifer says:

Big, central house in Ambleside. We felt at home. Two parking spaces were handy. Nice little yard as well if you are lucky to get some sun. Would recommend. Great location. Just to say there are lots of stairs, just in a case for accessibility.

  • Matt says:

Excellent place to stay, middle of the town so everything within walking distance. Very clean and tidy with large lounge / dining room / kitchen which was perfect for a bigger group.

  • Erica says:

Herald Cottage is ideally located in Ambleside, with all the amenities you would need for a large group to comfortably stay – big shared areas, private rooms, laundry and dishwashing, etc. Would definitely stay again and recommend.

  • Steve says:

Great cottage perfectly located in center of Ambleside, plenty of space and everything you need for a relaxing and enjoyable break.

  • Andy says:

Great place to stay, the living space and kitchen are great for larger groups. The bedrooms are ideal and the showers are amazing. Would defo book again. Many Thanks

  • Jamie says:

House was lovely, and location was incredible. We had a brilliant time. Thank you

  • Zoe says:

A lovely Airbnb in a great location. Michelle was really helpful and we’d definitely stay here again.

  • Geraldine says:

Great location, very well equipped kitchen. Sauna is terrific on a cold day. Garage is tight but doable.

  • Alex says:

Great cottage, ideal location and perfect for groups of friends!

  • Gill says:

What a pleasure! Beautiful property, fantastic location and such a treat to be able to have a sauna after a day of walking – it felt like a spa with all the comforts of home. Can’t wait to return!

  • Sara says:

Lovely cottage in the middle of Ambleside. Really convenient and cosy for a group with both adults and children. We had a lovely stay here, and it allowed us to stay warm after a long day out in the rain!

  • Sam says:

This is a spacious home, clean and well equipped. We were a family of 4 adults and 2 children (1 couple, 2 single adults) the bedrooms were comfortable and having 3 levels worked very well for us. We cooked most days and had everything we needed. There were some very thoughtful touches, tea, coffee, milk and sugar in the kitchen, enough for a cuppa on arrival, a few dishwasher tablets and bits so I didn’t have to rush to the shops. The location is amazing, easily walkable to shops, wonderful fish and chips and many other restaurants and pubs. It is then about 10-15 minutes walk to Lake Windermere were the children loved swimming in the lake while we relaxed in the park overlooking them. The parking is tight but doable, my daughter had her car (Ford fiesta) and that fit nicely in the garage, my car was outside the garage (Nissan Qashqui), it was tight but manageable. We had a couple of maintenance issues but someone was round very quickly to do whatever they could to fix things, good communication throughout. The area is outstanding and a week was nowhere near long enough, we hiked, swam, climbed and explored and feel we have seen a very small part of the Lake District, we will be back.

  • Adam says:

Great house, great location. Very clean and ideally located in the centre of Ambleside. Will be trying to come back to this place.

  • Alison says:

The house is in an excellent location which gives great flexibility and no need to use the car. We recommend parking large cars in the town car park as they could not fit in the garage but we knew this would be the case. The sofas are large enough for a group and we really appreciated the quality beds and showers and the heated boot room and sauna would make a big difference if it was raining/cold. Would very much like to stay there again.

  • Rita says:

Do not hesitate in choosing this accommodation, beautifully presented and perfect location! Lots of eating places in the area and places to easily ride out to! Spot on!

  • William says:

We are 3 recently retired couples. Great location with most amenities a short walk. T Internally the cottage was very clean and comfortable and had everything you need for self catering. The sauna was a nice addition. Overall we were very happy with the cottage and would certainly stay there again.

  • Alan says:

I can highly recommend this property, My family enjoyed a very fortunate (weather wise ) week here in July 2021. I cannot make any comment about the sauna as their was no need to use it, the entire week the tempreture was in the very high 20’s. A first for me in the Lake District.
As for the house, it was perfect for 6 adults and three young children. It was clean, well equiped and comfortable. Location is wonderful. Parking was well notified as being tight, which it is. However anyone with slightly above average driving skills will find it no bother, and our cars are no Mini’s. As for the hosts, they were fantastic and helpful. I did contact them a few times (due to me being doddery!!) and the replied promptly and efficiantly. Hightly recomended

  • Holly says:

Perfect for our family holiday! We celebrated my Dads 60th and the open plan kitchen/diner/lounge is a lovely place to enjoy spending time together. Great location in Ambleside with lots of pubs, restaurants and shops just on the doorstep.

  • Chris says:

A beautiful property in a beautiful location, a perfect base for walking straight from the door up onto the mountains or walking down to Windermere for water sports! would 100% stay again!

  • Nick says:

Thanks for a great stay in Ambleside. The cottage was perfect – well worth waiting for! And thanks for the flexibility around all the covid rearranging.

  • Ashley says:

Herald Cottage is in a great location in the heart of Ambleside. The bedrooms are laid out over 3 floors, each with their own bathroom which was perfect for 3 couples & the beds are very comfortable! Thankyou, we had a wonderful break & will definitely be back 🙂

  • Sue says:

We loved our stay in Herald Cottage. The cottage is lovely, well equipped. Its location is just right for all the local amenities. Highly recommended!”

  • Danielle & Duncan says:

Absolutely fantastic place to stay in the heart of Ambleside. The home was perfect for us to travel to with another couple and our daughters. It was very well equipped and had everything we needed to prepare meals during our stay. Parking is a bit tricky, as with many of the properties in the area and is down a very narrow side road. The garage would not fit a larger car, so I would not recommend if travelling with a larger vehicle. Everything else about the home was wonderful and it made for a very cosy stay.

  • Caroline says:

Lovely, comfortable property with lots of space and nice additions. Easy check-in process and good directions! Great location for getting into the heart of the lakes or just enjoying the shores of Windemere.

  • Anne Chew says:

    Herald Cottage is a gem.
Central location . Has everything you need . Well equipped kitchen. Three bath or shower rooms. Comfortable beds. Great social areas . Highly recommend for couples/families who want to explore Ambleside.

  • Miles says:

Well appointed clean property in a great location for a holiday based in Ambleside.

  • Jane says:

Beautiful house, very comfortable beds and the sauna was great after long walks!

  • Josh says:

Great location and great place to stay for large groups

  • Ellie says:

Such a lovely place to stay in a large group. Very spacious and comfortable for 8. Especially good for people who like to stay in and have a meal round the table and games in the cottage. Couldn’t ask for a better location either! Would highly recommend.”

  • Rebecca says:

We had a lovely stay at Herald Cottage and the house was warm, comfortable and clean. The cottage had everything we needed and was in a great location!

  • Sasha says:

The Herald Cottage was a wonderful place to stay for our get-away to the lakes. The host was fab and responded to our messages quickly. It was spacious and clean, with comfy beds and furnishings. Perfect for a large family or a group of friends . I would definitely stay there again.

  • Tracey says:

Spot on location, very central for amazing walks and access to Lake Windermere :)”

  • Rebecca says:

“We had a wonderful stay and thought the place was fantastic. The parking was quite tricky. The kitchen was great and well equipped.. We would also recommend some fans for hot summer months, as the top two floors were extremely hot. It was great to be able to get away safely in the current situation and so nice to have a home-y place to come back to, right in the centre of town.”

  • Ian Risby says:

Sadly very disappointing. Herald cottage completely oversold on site with its skilful photography. The cottage itself is of course well situated in the heart of Ambleside but I’m sorry to say that is it’s only unique selling point. Net curtains with mould at the bottom in front of windows that don’t open in double bedroom, not nice. Fridge freezer which chose to randomly alarm at all hours, very uncomfortable dining chairs, shortage of basic items like wine glasses (although this was quickly rectified when reported) and food tongs. The courtyard shouldn’t really be mentioned in the property description as it’s so small and not a practical space for a family to make use of. The access to parking space needs to be made clear is NOT suitable for all cars, the lane is very very narrow. Finally we expected to find the property spotlessly clean, especially in these times, but we didn’t. A discarded flip flop under a coffee table, a sofa which was obviously thick with dust and a full coffee pot, presumably left from previous resident, gave us some concern not to mention no hand soap or toilet rolls provided on arrival Overall not as expected and slightly confused by the number of glowing reviews. This is not a 5 star property and in fact very much needs some investment.

    • Good afternoon Ian and thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at Herald Cottage.

Naturally, we’re sorry to learn that you were anything short of happy with your chosen accommodation for the weekend.

We agree that during these current times, every property should be presented to the highest possible standard of cleanliness and it’s unfortunate that you chose not to mention this and the lack of loo rolls and hand soaps upon your arrival. We would have been pleased to attend to matters quickly and efficiently as we did when providing the extra glassware to you. The seat pads for the chairs have been removed, as have a number of soft furnishings due to the current pandemic as these cannot be laundered each time. We do make mention of the narrow alley and the parking space and as of Monday this week, have include dimensions of the alley and the garage for future guests. Had you advised us that you were having difficulties, we could have assisted and provided you with a permit for use on the nearby car parks as an alternative but, we appreciate that you were on holiday and no doubt wanted to enjoy every moment with your party.

Since receiving your communication, we have made arrangements to meet the caretaking team at the house to discuss your communication, investigate the issues you have raised, and correct any shortfalls. We appreciate your expectations on this occasion were not met for which we are sorry. All of our team have visited all our of retreats personally and we would be delighted to have the opportunity to be of service to you again in the future, and to assist you in making the perfect choice for your family break. Once again, thank you for taking the time to inform us of your findings as this helps us review and improve upon our service.

Keep safe and well in these challenging times and we hope to welcome you back to the Lakes again in the future.

      With all best wishes,

      Gerry,
      Lakeland Retreats

  • Vigan says:

“Very good location and host would defintately reccomend”

  • Stewart says:

This place has such an amazing location with everything in Ambleside on your doorstep. There was a lovely welcome pack of edible treats and the house had everything we needed. Parking was tricky but to be expected in Ambleside so be prepared to hunt around and travel in as few cars as possible. Would recommend and stay again

  • Carolyn says:

This is an amazing house, brilliantly located in Ambleside. We had 3 generations staying, 4 adults and 3 children, and we never felt cramped or on top of each other. It was lovely and clean with lots of towels and the boot/drying room came in very handy with the weather over the weekend! One thing I will mention is the parking, it is extremely tight to get back out of the courtyard (I scraped all down one door!) so if you’re driving anything wider or longer than a BMW X2 be super careful!! I would definitely stay here again, I just won’t park there

  • Pauline says:

  • Sharmila says:

We were group of 8 friends. We had a good time at Herald cottage. Windermere lake, shops and restaurants were at walking distance. The cottage was clean and the common area was nice and cozy. The sauna was great too. The only problem was one of our cars was big so we had a difficult time parking as the road leading to the cottage was narrow. Overall, we had a wonderful stay at Herald cottage.”

  • Amelia says:

It is in a perfect location with everything you need. Will definitely visit again.

  • Jack says:

Lovely place to stay. Very responsive team which was great. Amazing location too. The sauna is great after a long day. Would definitely stay again

  • Paul says:

We had a family birthday weekend at Herald Cottage and we all really enjoyed it. The house is well maintained, clean, great kitchen with all mod cons. The sauna was fun and well worth a go even in June after a days walking. The drive through the alley way to park up is tight for a wider car and that’s the only downside. Its a recommend from us !!

  • Sarah says:

We loved our stay at the cottage. It’s perfectly located, very stylish and has great amenities. It was great to be able to collect the keys from the key safe two minutes away too.
