Ghyll End is quietly tucked away above the village, close to the famous 70ft waterfall Stock Ghyll Force which cascades down into Ambleside through a series of spectacular displays passing under the famous Bridge House and into the River Rothay. The delightful sound of the falls is never far away whilst enjoying the garden and grounds at Ghyll End.
The cottage is a leisurely stroll from the centre of town where you’ll find an assortment of supermarkets, butchers and bakers intermingled with tea rooms, bars and eateries. The glorious fells that sit proudly above the village and surround England’s largest Lake are, of course, the main attraction for many but, when the weather turns sour, why not try out the indoor Climbing Wall, take in a film at one of two cinemas, or simply get your waterproofs on and enjoy the Lakes for what they are, simply stunning!
Sitting in a cluster of similar modern cottages, Ghyll End sits at the end of the row so enjoys lovely views from the front towards the local fell range.
Step inside and instantly relax and unwind in the spacious living area with colour TV, DVD and basic Sky package, WiFi, Bluetooth speaker and radio and plenty of windows allowing for lots of natural light. The kitchen has all you’ll need to cater for everyone in your party and the pretty garden with sloping lawns and small terrace is the perfect spot to take in the afternoon sun.
Upstairs you’ll find a modern bathroom with shower over a pea shaped bath, a large kingsize bedroom with dual aspect and lovely outlook, a spacious twin to the rear and a single with cabin style bunk bed (guard available and not suitable for those under 5 years of age). There’s bags of storage here at Ghyll End including a covered entrance porch for all that wet walking gear and of course, drying off the dog!
The property has gas central heating throughout.

Respond to Ghyll End
We had a brilliant stay – the location is perfect, very quiet and peaceful close by to the waterfall, but just a 5 minute walk into Ambleside. We stayed with our 1 year old daughter and dog – and thought the house was really well set up for for both!
Excellent communication.
Spotlessly clean. Great location. And lovely welcoming touches to make our stay special.
This house is in a perfect location and would be great if looked after properly, but sadly it was not clean when we arrived. The couches were covered in dog hair and I had to clean it before we unpacked. It smelled of wet dog and the upstairs window frames were covered in black mould which indicates to me that there is a damp problem. The bathrooms were not thoroughly cleaned. I am assured by the company that this is a one off but as I was persuaded to book by the many reviews saying how pristine it was, I felt it was necessary to say this here. We were surprised by how cheap it was for a cottage in this location and sadly it turned out to be too good to be true.
We really enjoyed staying here. The property is a short 5 min walk downhill to Ambleside (means a 10 min but not too arduous walk back up) and is perfectly situated for the Stock Ghyll Force which is a lovely place to walk. The house was well appointed, clean and suited our family of 5 really well. Would highly recommend. Ambleside is well situated for Lake Windermere. The village has lots of lovely pubs, bakery, shops and restaurants. A perfect base in the Lake District.
Booked at short notice, good communication with the host. This was a nice little house in a great location, only 5 minute walk to the water fall and 10 minute walk to Ambleside centre. We stayed for 4 nights and didn’t use our car once! The house was clean and has all the mod cons required, Sky TV and fast WiFi.
What a beautiful cottage! It has all the amenities required for a short stay and in immaculate condition. The location is only a five min walk into Ambleside where there is lots to see and do. We have two young children (ages 3 and 6), who had an amazing time, as did we. Just a point to note, the garden to the back is quite steep and has no boundary.
Lovely cottage in a great location. So easy to pop down into Ambleside or up and out onto the fells. The main bedroom has three windows and lots of light – fabulous!!!!
Lovely, spacious cottage just a 5 mins walk from the center of Ambleside. Right next to the falls which you can hear as soon as you open the door. It’s an uphill walk back from Ambleside to the cottage. The place was immaculately clean and was perfect for the four of us and our dog. The garden isn’t enclosed and opens onto other gardens, which wasn’t a problem for us but just something to bear in mind if you have a dog. The welcome pack was a lovely touch too. Hopefully, we will return one day!
Just back from a very nice stay at Ghyll End. We did a walk everyday from the doorstep, the car never moved. We had our cockapoo with us and that went well. I would say I wouldn’t let her out in the garden as it is shared but great on the lead, also nice waterfall wood around the corner. The welcome basket was a very nice touch. We ate at Sheila’s Cottage which was gorgeous as normal. Great check in and communication!!
Lovely accommodation, immaculately clean and had everything we needed for our stay with some thoughtful extras for doggie guests and lots of games for the children. Brilliant location for walking to the waterfalls or into Ambleside. We enjoyed hearing the waterfalls every day!
Please note there is no mattress in the travel cot so you need to bring something with you.
Perfect accommodation Ghyll End is central for shops, restaurants and walking. Clean, comfortable, warm and cozy-couldn’t have asked for more. Will return and recommend.
Fab week in the lakes! We go every year but it was the first time at Ghyll End and with Lakeland Retreats and already booked the same for next year. Great house, everything you need and lovely furnishing. The welcome basket and dog box are a nice touch. Great location right near the waterfalls for dogs walks and a just a few minutes to Ambleside. Looking forward to returning next year already!
One of the best self-catering properties we’ve experienced. Really well equipped (the espresso machine was a treat!), generous sized rooms, comfortable bed and a great location. Beautiful walks from the door past waterfalls and into the hills. Just a short stroll into town with a huge choice of eateries.
“Michelle – accommodation was first class and very clean. We have had an excellent week in a great location thank you
Amazing house and fantastic location in centre of Ambleside yet quietly tucked away – also has parking which is essential. 5 minute walk into town for shops bars and restaurants whilst also being close to local walking and swimming hot spots – will definitely stay again, thank you
Comfortable, cosy house with plenty of space to relax and unwind after a day of outdoor adventure. The location is great – lots of things to do straight from the door step.
Perfect location for a visit to the area. The house was spotless and great thought had been given on being “Covid safe”. We had a very comfortable week and wouldn’t hesitate to book again if we were coming to Ambleside. Thank you.
A really nice home away from home. It had everything we need, was spacious and comfortable. A short walk (less than five minutes) to the waterfalls nature walk, and a short walk to the restaurants and cafes of Ambleside (less than 10 minutes). It was so nice we didn’t want to go home!
We had a lovely stay at this house. On arrival the house was perfectly clean, beds were made up and everything we could possibly require was provided. Beds were confortable. Great Internet connection. Town is 5 minutes walk down the hill and interesting walks can be accessed without taking the car. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back.
Well located, next to the waterfall..you could hear the waterfall from the apartment. The apartment is well maintained, and immaculate. Highly recommended.
