Carr Crag Pavilion is one of two rather special, architect-designed semi-detached retreats located in Skelwith Bridge, at the foot of the Langdale Valley. Set in an acre of woodland gardens, awash with bluebells in the Spring and visited by a variety of wildlife including deer, rabbits, woodpeckers.
Enjoy a riverside walk along the Brathay to Elterwater and Loughrigg Tarn, stopping off for refreshments at the renowned Chesters By The River for tea and cake, or something stronger at the nearby Talbot Bar.
Just 3 miles from Ambleside and Grasmere, the location is ideal for enjoying some of the finest walking that the area has to offer and the perfect base from which to explore this beautiful corner of the Lakes.
Once inside, a warming woodburning stove creates a relaxing and homely ambience in the open plan living and dining space, the full length windows allowing you to look out over the woodland and spot the visiting wildlife.
All on the ground floor, Carr Crag Pavilion is comfortably furnished and provides good accommodation for four with two good bedrooms, one twin and one king sharing in a modern shower room and an up to date kitchen with all the facilities you’ll need to fully self-cater. There’s ample parking within the grounds and plenty of outdoor space to enjoy with the children or the dog.
The property has electric heating throughout with tiled floors except the bedrooms that have carpets

Really lovely and private place to stay. We had our dog and daughter so the garden was perfect for them to run around. We even had deer visit on our last morning! 8 minute drive to Ambleside is ideal.
Would highly recommend! Beautiful location. Couldn’t fault it.
Brilliant location. Everything you need for a week in the Lakes. Close to pubs, cafes and great walks.
Carr Crag Pavilion lived up to all our expectations. It’s a perfect location in the heart of the Lake District to explore, walk and enjoy the surrounding breath-taking scenery. The Pavilion was clean, warm and well-equipped for 4 people. the garden was beautiful and the wonderful Chesters was just across the road. Highly recommended.
A great stay for a weekend. Best location with walks on the door step. Within easy reach of Grasmere, Ambleside and Windermere. Would definitely stay again. Bring, lots of wood for the fire in winter.
Absolutely beautiful place very central for some lovely walks, spotlessly clean & a welcoming gift when you arrive as well as milk in the fridge so you can have a coffee & chill when you arrive. Definitely will return.
Overall, it is a lovely place to stay (would give 4.5 stars if that was possible). The accommodation is spacious and clean, and the furniture and beds are very comfortable. Kitchen has all the necessary appliances, pans, and utensils, and was nice to have coffee, sugar, and milk waiting upon our arrival. Lovely garden/grounds and outside seating. And visiting deer! The location is wonderful, right in the countryside but no so off the beaten track that getting there is a hassle. It’s about 45mins walk from Ambleside which was fine for us. I would recommend taking the route that leads through Bog Lane; it’s a little longer but otherwise you’ll be walking down a busy – but often narrow – road mostly on said road. Note there is zero phone signal in the house; we found this a blessing, but others may not (there is signal in the parking area). We would definitely stay again. There were a few things to be aware of though. The way the heating is arranged and controlled, and lack of heated towel rack, means there isn’t anywhere to effectively dry wet (as opposed to damp) clothes. We were caught in a downpour so were soaked, and drying clothes from that state was tricky. Also, did feel a little nickel-and-dimed in places given it is not a cheap place. Not the end of the world, but only being provided with two toilet rolls and only enough wood for one evening’s fire (with no kindling/lighters or matches) was frustrating.
Amazing place, lovely location – we saw deer every day. A home from home.
It was a wonderful week beautiful accommodations, deer in the back garden and red squirrels everywhere, it was heaven.
We really enjoyed our stay at Carr Crag. Lots of good walks on your doorstep including Loughrigg Tarn and Fell. Chester’s, across the road, is great for coffee and sourdough bread (but watch kids with the road…it’s a blind corner and they don’t spare the horses!). The Brittania at Elterwater (30 min walk) is worth the effort for food and beer but Talbot will do in an emergency. The cottage is well appointed. Lovely shower and comfy beds. Broadband is a bit tardy but to be expected. Overall a good spot!
The most beautiful setting in the lakes!! We enjoyed a gorgeous long weekend as a family of 5 here. It was perfect. We were greeted by deer every afternoon in the back garden. Our children loved the garden and ran up and down the hill throughout the weekend. We toasted marshmallows on the fire pit in the evening and we had a beautiful walk to Elterwater. The cottage had everything we needed and was a lovely break from the busy lives we all lead. We would visit again in a heartbeat. Fantastic host & beautiful property!!
Excellent service from Lakeland Retreats. Accommodation was lovely and an ideal location. The garden was great with its very own deer, fantastic. Nice local walks and the food at the Skelwith Bridge Hotel was very good. We will be back!
The location, cleanliness and layout of cottage is perfect.
Everything was absolutely perfect, I couldn’t fault a thing. The location was great, with a handful of walks being right on your doorstep with many others being just a short drive away. The gardens were beautiful and was made even better by the local deer paying a visit every morning/afternoon. The place itself was stunning and everything we could need was already provided for us! I throughly enjoyed my stay and will definitely be back again in the future!
Lodging was perfect and as described. So quiet and peaceful and in a beautiful setting. Very comfortable with all amenities necessary for a short stay. Fully recommended
Just as amazing as the previous 5 visits.
We keep coming back because this place is super.
This is the first time we hired Carr Cragg, previously we always hired out the Lawns but due to now having our 2 hear old daughter with us, we needed the separate bedroom.
A truly superb location and a real gem of a cottage. Well equipped, great communication and superb value for money. You can walk straight from the door with the dog and enjoy all that the Langdale’s have to offer. The local pub is very good but walking up the river to Elterwater and you will find the lovely Britannia Inn which has great food and a stunning location. The house was well equipped and neat and tidy – the champagne on arrival and milk in the fridge was a nice touch. Will certainly go again.
First time visiting Lake district and this location didn’t disappoint.
Lovely property in a beautiful location. The check-in process was easy and well-communicated. Check-out time is a bit early at 10am but otherwise a great stay.
Great place. Wonderful garden, deer visited on a couple of days. Accommodation very comfortable. Highly recommend.
Thankyou for a lovely stay! ❤️✨ Right near Chesters which is perfect for us were vegan! Lovely walks nearby too – will be back!
Great location close to Ambleside. Perfect for walks straight from the cottage. Was great for the dog as well. Property had everything I needed for my stay just a quick trip to Asda and I was all set.
Great location and pleasant, clean property. Highlight was watching deer in the garden!
Great location. Quiet but close to lovely walks, chesters cafe and a pub. Would love to stay again
We (family of 4 with two teenagers) thoroughly enjoyed this property, it was situated in a lovely area next to Ambleside and close enough to pretty much everything else you’d want to visit in the Lakes. When we arrived we used the keybox and read the manual left out for us, the company were very helpful in all dealings and the property was well cleaned before we arrived. The property itself was well equipped and left us feeling very comfortable when we were there and not out exploring. The bedrooms are of a good size with comfortable beds and the bathroom and kitchen are fine for family use with the lounge area to relax in, the wood burner works very well and heats the room quickly. The property itself is tucked up a lane with off-road parking and is very quiet, a really nice spot to hide away in for your stay. We had a lovely week here.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here – would definitely recommend. The outdoor space was amazing and it was very clean with all the facilities you’d expect 🙂
Amazing location with a beautiful garden. The wildlife (including a family of deer!) visiting the garden each day was fabulous. Great for relaxing or as a base for walking.
Perfect spot to get out and explore with walking trails right on the doorstep leading to the most stunning lakes. Would also highly recommend the pub at the end of the road. Didn’t want to leave!
Lovey cottage, great gardens and ideal setting for walking, biking & coffee/ cake at Chester’s. Communication excellent and check in easy. Hope to revisit. Thanks
This was such a perfect place for a low key celebration. The grounds were particularly stunning with the bluebells and wildlife (we saw a baby deer and it’s mother whilst eating our breakfast outside), and the beds were especially comfy! We all had a joyous time, and would definitely stay again.
Lovely accommodation, great local walks from the door.
The house and grounds are lovely. A great location, lots of walks from the house and easy car access to Ambleside, Grasmere and Coniston. We had an excellent lunch at Zeffirellis in Ambleside. We really enjoyed our stay.
Beautiful cottage in a secluded and peaceful location. Great to listen to the birds on a morning, and watch the squirrels in the trees. The cottage has everything you need to feel relaxed and comfortable.
A short 5 min walk to Chesters for great food, or a 30 min walk into Elterwater and Chapel Stile for Pub grub. Had 2 great meals in the Brittania Inn in Elterwater.
Hope to return soon.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Carr Crag Pavillion. The location is great and easy to find. The property was clean and tidy and had everything we needed for our stay. It was warm and comfortable too. Some of the furnishings are a little tired but nothing that detracted from our enjoyment of our stay here. Would stay here again.
Carr Cragg is in a lovely setting ,we had a visit from a deer during our stay. The place itself is well set out and has all the things you need in the kitchen to cook your own meals if you dont want to make use of the Talbot Bar a couple of minutes down the road. Has a log burner in the main room which is great on those wet days, although the storage heaters give out enough warmth on most days. Lots of hot water for the shower as well. Great location for Windermere and Ambleside.
Beautiful place in a beautiful location Great for walks pub and restaurant 2 mins away.
We’ve had a lovely week at Carr Crag Pavilion with our 2 Labradors. Fantastic location fantastic views fantastic walks & lots of sightings of deers. Lakeland Retreats are a great company & their arrival box is simply yummy. Thankyou
“This is the way to relax!”
A great little bolt hole for key places to visit across the Lakes area
Great size property and grounds. Lovely and quiet location with easy drive to all the main attractions. It’s easy to miss the driveway so make sure you read the directions the owner gives you.
In a beautiful wooded private dell , safe for children and our dog to play . The children loved the fire pit at the top of the garden and we sat round in the dark telling stories and listening to music . You can walk across the road to the Talbot pub for a hearty meal and a game of pool . Come back to the cabin and sit in front of the log burner to keep warm . Lots of great walks right opposite the property .
Thanks for a great holiday so quiet and peaceful. Will definitely stay again .
“Fantastic cottage in the heart of Lake district with all amenities, silence to enjoy and walk to Pub after drenched walks. Skelwith bridge is strategically located in the middle of Langlades valley, at the crossroads (and almost walking distance) from Lake Windermere, Lake Coniston and the lovely villages of Grassmere and Ambleside. Great discount if you take the whole week and very efficient welcome from Michelle with some thoughtful touches for breakfasts. Not to be missed!
Great location close to Chester’s tea rooms. Short drive to Ambleside. Beautiful quiet location. You can hear the water in the background. Perfect self catering facilities for a family of four. Large beautiful and extensive outdoor area perfect for a bbq. We had some really cosy nights in with the kids
