Contemporary, Lakeland Getaway In A Central Village Location

Birch House is a sophisticated, contemporary retreat sitting at the end of a row of traditional terraced cottages in the very heart of Windermere. Set out over four floors with great facilities including a social dining room and two separate cosy seating areas, there’s plenty of space for a family or group of friends to spread out and enjoy some well deserved R&R during your stay. Ticking all those boxes on your wish list, Birch House has that all-important wood burning stove, a sunny sitting-out area and is pet friendly too!

Windermere is arguably one of the most popular resorts in the area and a great base from where to explore all the attractions of the Southern Lakes. First time visitors can enjoy low level walks right from the door and be rewarded with superb views from the top of School Knott, Brantfell and Orrest Head – the youngsters will love The Gruffalo that sits at the foot of this newly ‘accessible to all’ local peak. The streets of Windermere are lined with interesting shops, bars and galleries as well as some superb eateries and coffee shops – try a Homeground sarnie from Homeground Coffee and Kitchen, one of our absolute go-to places!

Quality furnishings set against a calming, modern colour palate

Step straight into the cosy lounge area with a glorious wood-burning stove set in a stone surround; light the fire, sink into the comfy, deep-cushioned sofa and settle down to watch your favourite series on the wall-mounted SMART TV and make yourself at home! The dining room is stylishly furnished with well-placed accent lighting, the perfect spot for enjoying leisurely brunches and special dinners and flows effortlessly through to the modern kitchen where you’ll find everything you need to properly self-cater with plenty of workspace so everyone can lend a hand with dinner.

Stairs in between the sitting and dining areas lead up to the first floor where you’ll find two comfortable double bedrooms that share the house shower room where you’ll find a neat cubicle, basin and WC.

Up another level to the second floor and the piece de resistance, the master Kingsize suite, a glorious, light bright space for two with a luxurious and huge shower room with a double walk-in shower, vanity basin and WC.

Back to the living areas and Birch House is blessed with a second sitting room on the lower ground floor, a delightful chillout area to break away from the others, listen to some tunes via the Sonos system or enjoy a couple more chapters of your holiday novel.

Outside, there’s a small seating area to the front of the cottage, perfect for enjoying a morning coffee or pre-dinner drink.

Parking is by way of a permit (one supplied) allowing you to park on a number of adjacent streets close to the cottage. You can of course pull up directly outside the cottage to unload. For additional vehicles, we can recommend Broad Street Car Park where you can take advantage of £1 for the day Early Bird Parking if you pull up before 9am. There is also parking for one small car on a first come first served basis behind the cottage. Details of this can be found in the cottage.

  • Cate says:

A beautiful, centrally placed house, with a deceptive amount of space. We had a lovely weekend here, just too short to do the house or area justice.

  • Phil says:

Lovely stay at the house, would definitely recommend

Amazing place in a great location. Can’t fault it.

  • Ross says:

Birch House is lovely! Looks exactly like it does in the pictures. We had excellent communication throughout and a very easy check-in. The location is right off the main street in Windermere – shops and eateries are literally minutes away. Bowness is again within walking distance and Lake Windermere itself is accessible on foot if you’re keen (like we were) to swim while you’re visiting the area. Our dog was also welcome – so I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place to you. (People often moan about the parking situation in The Lakes. We found it not to be a problem staying here. We parked on street, free of charge, about a 6 minute walk away from the property for the entire duration of our stay.)

  • Sunita says:

A very well presented house in a central location and the benefit of a parking space. Very good facilities and tastefully furnished property. We especially appreciated the top floor king size bedroom and en-suite shower. Highly recommended

  • Erika & Eamon says:

This house was fantastic. Plenty of room for us and really nice. The location is great. We went out for day trips but also did more local activities we could walk to. The parking is tricky – we had a permit but often couldn’t find a spot anyway in the evening – but there is a large pay lot near by and after 8pm it’s only £1 for the next 24 hours! We loved the pubs nearby and had a great breakfast one day. Also loved the local shops and sites. Highly recommend this house! It was also amazing to have a fire one chilly rainy evening!!

  • Sally - Anne says:

We had a great time in this lovely cottage (June 2022). Everything was exactly as described. Hot water always available and everything sparkly new and really tastefully decorated. A home from home and we appreciated every bit of it. Parking was easy – we never struggled (and we have quite a big car), as was visitor parking which was reasonably priced too. We’d love to stay again, if you’d have us!

  • Sophie says:

An amazing house in a great location, logs for the fire was a great touch after a long day of hiking or swimming. Bedrooms were beautiful and bathrooms super clean. Only downside was trying to find somewhere to park the car but we knew this before we checked in and parking is often tricky all over the Lake District! Would stay again 🙂

  • Linda says:

  • Alison says:

We had a fantastic stay in this beautiful house. It was spotlessly clean and had everything you would need. After a very wet and cold walk it was lovely to come back to a warm house and have the bonus of a wood burning stove! It is very central and is close to shops and very good restaurants.

  • Richard says:

What a fab place to stay you can’t beat the location and the owners have really capitalised on every inch of space. Tip. Don’t forget to look under the stairs you’ll find another room.

  • Natalie says:

Fantastic cottage; super cosy and very clean. Exceptionally well equipped. We spent a week here and could have easily done 2. No complaints at all.

  • Tara Aldrich says:

Our family stayed at Birch House for New Year Dec 2021-Jan 2022
The property was immaculate, clean, beautifully decorated.
The kitchen was well equipped and the property had everything you needed whether you were going out for dinner every night or eating in. The restaurants, pubs snd takeaways in Windermere were fantastic too.
One negative comment is that there was nowhere to hang your coats, in particular wet coats from the wonderful wet Windermere weather.
Our girls liked to escape to the basement but it for some chill out time but it was a bit cold down there so we didn’t sit down there as a family.
The master bedroom suite and other bedrooms were perfect and very comfortable..
I would highly recommend this property to anyone wanting to stay in Windermere.
We will definitely come and stay again.

Our stay at Birch House was everything we had hoped for. The house itself has been decorated to a high standard and with everything you might need for a weekend away. The location is fantastic and we enjoyed our stay so much we are already considering booking again for next year!
Lakeland Retreats were really responsive to any queries we had, we really cannot fault the company or the house!

  • Nick says:

Amazing property in the heart of the central lakes. Would strongly recommend the property to people who are looking for a great location when exploring the southern fells. Very close to Windermere and Bowness. Will be heading back very soon.

  • Vanessa says:

We had a great stay in the cottage right at the heart of Windermere. It was beautifully decorated & very clean throughout. We chose to eat out every night but there was ample space to cook & eat in. We found some great local bars & restaurants. I checked ahead incase we needed to book but in most places, we didn’t. We went on the boat & used the local bus service to explore as well as doing lots of work. Loved it. Thanks.
